How to Find My Local Drama School?

HOW TO FIND MY PERFECT DRAMA SCHOOL.

There are several key points you should take into consideration when trying to find the perfect drama School.

Before looking for an appropriate school decide what disciplines you would like your child to do.

WHAT KIND OF CLASSES ARE THERE?

1. dance
2. drama
3. singing

These classes can be taken separately or some schools offer them collectively in a three hour session.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO GAIN FROM THEIR CLASSES?

1. Confidence and social skills
2. Fun
3. Performance experience
4. Exams
5. Festivals
6. Technique
7. Drama school entry
8. A combination of some or all the above.

Being clear about your objective will help you to find the school that best suits your child.

WHAT AGE CAN MY CHILD START TAKING CLASSES?

Some schools take children as young as 2 years, though any age is suitable to introduce drama through games.

HOW CAN I BE SURE THE SCHOOL IS REPUTABLE AND THAT MY CHILD WILL BE SAFE?

Always make sure the teachers are CRB checked. Look carefully at the schools website for information on their staff and read testimonials from other pupils who already attend the school. Find out how long the school has been established and the background of the founders.

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

1. Compare several schools and look at classes available. Prepare a list of questions, call and speak to someone at each school and gather as much information as possible.

2. Ask for a free trial or taster session before you commit to paying for a full term.

3. Talk to other parents whose children attend the school.

HOW MUCH ARE CLASSES?

Class costs vary tremendously. This is another good reason to compare Drama schools and services.

Some Drama schools expect payment in advance, others in split payments and some will offer a pay-as-you-go rate. Some organisations offer free workshops.

DO I NEED TO BUY A UNIFORM?

A lot of Drama schools like you to wear their T Shirts or sweat shirts; this can be most effective for displays, festivals and exams. Some schools have no uniform or, if they do, it is not compulsory.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IF THERE IS NO UNIFORM?

Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes that allow you to move  Dramacool  around freely and do wear sensible shoes. (No heels, Girls!)

SHOULD MY CHILD TAKE EXAMS?

Taking Drama exams is a very personal choice. It is a great way to mark improvement, but equally, a display or a performance can also demonstrate this. Some Drama schools do offer an end of term report card.

MY CHILD WANTS TO BE AN ACTOR WHEN THEY LEAVE SCHOOL, WHAT SORT OF TRAINING SHOULD THEY BE HAVING?

An all round training in the three disciplines would be advantageous; also they should try to gain as much performance experience as possible. They should also read plays and visit their local theatre whenever possible. They could also sign with an agent.
